Title: The House of Shattered Wings
Author: Aliette De Bodard
Publishing Date: Aug 28, 2016 by Gollancz
I received a copy from the publisher which I voluntarily reviewed. This does not affect my opinion in any way!
A superb murder mystery, on an epic scale, set against the fall out – literally – of a war in Heaven.
Paris has survived the Great Magicians War – just. Its streets are lined with haunted ruins, Notre-Dame is a burnt-out shell, and the Seine runs black with ashes and rubble. Yet life continues among the wreckage. The citizens continue to live, love, fight and survive in their war-torn city, and The Great Houses still vie for dominion over the once grand capital.
House Silverspires, previously the leader of those power games, lies in disarray. Its magic is ailing; its founder, Morningstar, has been missing for decades; and now something from the shadows stalks its people inside their very own walls.
Within the House, three very different people must come together: a naive but powerful Fallen, an alchemist with a self-destructive addiction, and a resentful young man wielding spells from the Far East. They may be Silverspires’ salvation. They may be the architects of its last, irreversible fall…
What really impressed me about this book was the power-play between the houses and the unique take on angels who have fallen with their political maneuvering and recklessness or should I say ruthlessness in achieving their aspirations in making their Houses come out on top.
I especially loved the curse aspect of it the plot and seeing how it wreaked havoc on an already falling House, Silverspire. and how the various characters react to this situation.
Morningstar, founder of House Silverspire is a most interesting character and I would have like to learn more about him, maybe see things from his perspective, have a peek into his most devious mind.
Overall. I found The House of Shattered Wings to be a really intriguing paranormal mystery/fantasy with a well executed story-line and and an amazing world peopled with characters who captivate and entertain. I really enjoyed this read.
